comment How can I copy files by creating symlinks?
I've done this a slightly different way, but what I really wanted was to run rsync (or something similar with inclusions/exclusions) such that it created symlinks rather than copying files. (My response to your answer was kind of snarky, so I'll give you credit for a correct answer as an apology.)

Thank you for letting me know what a symlink is! By "copy" I meant "link," because I don't actually want to make copies. I want to create symlinks.

comment How to achieve redundancy across data centers?
Pointing a DNS entry to two IP address will at best, cause a client to use them in a round-robin fashion, at worst, it will choose one or the other. DNS doesn't know anything about preferring one IP over another - it maps a name to an IP address.

The general term for this is "business continuity planning." As the linked questions/answers point out, there are a number of tradeoffs, basically between how fast you want the backup to kick in and how much you're willing to pay to achieve that. Whatever you decide, don't forget to test your plan!

Well, the "third site" might itself be implemented with redundancy.

comment Is there a simple way to merge a broken 2-way-MySQL replication
The question specifies that it's 2-way replication. I believe that he's saying he has two servers which replicate from each other. If one just puked on a replicated statement, that might be an easy fix. If the two masters have received mutually incompatible writes, that's a bit tougher.

comment Is there a simple way to merge a broken 2-way-MySQL replication
Is the problem that replication has broken on one, or is the problem that each master has received mutually incompatible writes?

The output will be easier to read if you use SHOW PROCESSLIST\G instead of SHOW PROCESSLIST;

comment Log MySQL login attempts
MySQL automatically denies connections from IP address that don't have at least one matching row in mysql.user

comment Sporadic crash of master-slave MySQL replication process
So the problem is really that your binary log doesn't have the contents it should? Can you reproduce that? If the binary log is wrong, then the behavior of the replicas is understandable. Save the binary logs, save the world!

comment What is archive mode in rsync?
I think you're missing the point that it's important to read the man page to know exactly what you're doing. rsync has some very powerful options, including a way to delete files! It's like your asking for help on using a table saw because you don't like reading instruction manuals.

comment SVN hook / svn up / conflict
@kaerast I worked at a place where the boss liked to edit in the working copy that we used as the production document root. Having conflicts in that would be embarrassing! See blog.joopp.com/2008/12/15/flickr-version-control

comment SVN hook / svn up / conflict
The question isn't about commits. The question is, if doing an svn update would cause a conflict with local modifications, can the commit be aborted before any files are changed at all.
