comment External USB drive on xen windows guest
It is recognised in the removable SR of the host, I assign it to the guest as a local storage in the guest.

comment Why do ethernet cables have 8 wires?
original spec was to also carry phone over the same connector. Remember voice calls were still a big feature of office life when UTP-ethernet was designed

comment VPN or RemoteDesktop?
@Zoredache - it was a few years ago, the RDP client on XP couldn't do localhost.

comment VPN or RemoteDesktop?
@Zoredache - Thanks, looks like tunneling port 443 over SSH is pretty simple. I seem to remember it being possible with VNC but not with RDP - but that might be an old issue.

comment VPN or RemoteDesktop?
It wasn't so much the traffic I was concerned about. If there was a backdoor discovered or their password store got hacked and a script went after every LogMeIn client on the net.

@Zoredache - but on windows you need a Gui to fix a lot of stuff. I'm a programmer with sysadm dumped on me, I'm not a powershell guru

I've used this for my desktop - but not sure I want it running on a server. If they get hacked so does my company.

comment Cloud storage options for client downloads
ps. Am I correct that the bucket isn't browsable even if you know the bucket name? Can you overide this? I set the bucket to public but still get an xml error

I just had a play with s3, the new web console makes it a lot easier than the old s3cmd. I just create a long pseudo-random bucket name and a meaningful file name to pass to the client. I don't think this was easy/possible(?) when I first played with s3.

Well obviously we would have redundancy - we would copy it to another cloud service ;-)

comment Is it a good idea to install Subversion on a production server?
I was assuming they meant a 'deploy' type build, ie. rolling out a website or server config rather than compiling an executable app.

@dbasnett good point - I assumed Google's 8.8.8.8 could handle the load.

tried it - too complicated to setup. Looks like I will write a bit of python

That's pretty much what I would have written (only in python) - I just assumed there was a little systray tool to do this.
