Something that I have noticed that favors HW raid: In my experience, if you're running SW raid and the system does anything other than a clean shutdown you'll fault the array and have to rebuild. HW raid doesn't fault if it wasn't writing when the system went down.

Or a real world event that almost happened to us: Someone stealing the server. (It appears they ran out of space to put things when the server was the next thing they would have taken.)

Going from a 7.2k to a 15k drive would mean a substantial speedup. There's not a lot more to be gained from Raid 0.
