comment Map drive from windows to linux file share
Thank you, instead of going the easy route and just closing the question, you answered it by giving me a few things to look into so that I have a chance to develop an attempted solution.

comment What is the recommended size for a server 2008 system partition?
might want to factor in a growing Windows\winsxs folder, I have one that is about 10GB on a system I am working on right now. blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2008/09/17/…

Thanks Randolph, I have several machines on different platforms doing different tasks (windows 2000,xp, 7, 2008 server, home server, osx, ubuntu, arch) but my windows home server is the one I would most like to apply this to. I have another TB hdd I want to add and could use the space as this computer holds all backups from all machines. I will likely add it as a mirror for the existing one. If there was an option for a reliable drive monitoring software that could actual predict failure that i did not know about and was actually worth trusting that would have been very worth it.

comment Anyone know of a good way to sell used servers?
so there is really not a place where big companies buy servers from that i was not aware of. i thought maybe there was a place that companies like google or some other large consumer of servers would buy wholesale or something and I could sell to them. Let me see if any more answers come up before I mark your answer as "answered" and thank you for answering!

comment How do I know before hand whether VC6 or VC9 fits me when installing PHP for windows?
you can use it with iis, not apache: Apparently apache.org's binaries are compiled w/ VC6. Mixing dynamically-loaded CRT versions creates a similar situation as statically linking it: separate heaps, meaning cross-binary memory management will cause heap corruption. Just as insidious is the possible difference in object size between the two CRT versions. If DLL A assumes a certain object is, say, 8 bytes and DLL B assumes 16 bytes, disaster is virtually assured.
