I'm a software developer and junkie at heart but it's more fun to hang out with my hardware people.

comment Deploy multiple office products using startup scripts
Good Point. One option may be to create a an MSI package that combines both installers. So for users that need both you would simply provide a combined installer. You would need to find a tool that can merge multiple EXEs with options into another EXE or MSI package. Not sure if that would work though.

comment Browse mapped network drives when connected over VPN
First, why are you still using WINS? Do you have old servers or clients on the network? Second, if you run nslookup commands over the VPN connection to your servers what results, if any, do you get?

@HopelessN00b Yea, I can see what you mean. BTW you can use rsync on Windows, been there and done that, it does work pretty well btw. It is probably about the same amount of pain and suffering as setting up DFS properly.

@sysadmin1138 Funny, every single recommendation based question for design and architecture I have seen has been closed simply because it calls for opinions on which platforms to use. I could have easily said rsync as opposed to DFS below or heck even xcopy, all would be valid.

This is off-topic, its a shopping/design/architecture question.

comment Why is ASP.NET not in the performance monitor?
Even if you could add the perfmon trackers it won't tell you what's causing the problem, only that there is a problem which it seems like you have already identified.

comment Why is ASP.NET not in the performance monitor?
If thats happening my guess is it is certainly related to something the application is doing. You might want to have a dev look into it or try to attach the VS remote debugger to try and catch a process when the load spikes. If it uses SQL as a backend you may want to monitor SQL at the time the load spike hits as well
