I'm a software developer and junkie at heart but it's more fun to hang out with my hardware people.

comment Can you generate a self signed certificate on Windows Server using CLI tools like certreq and certutil?
@DavidBullock If you bothered to read the entire answer you would see that I posted a link to the tool as well as the help documentation. Since the OP simply asked if it was possible I provided two possible ways as well as documentation on how to do it. I'm glad you posted an additional method as that should also work.

Ha, so run the 7zip binary from a remote network share :)

comment Why does my Server Core gets patches for Internet Explorer?
I understand that the actual browser is not available within the OS, however, IE uses shared components with the OS which handles things like proxy servers, etc. My point here is that most likely these components still exist in core, and most likely are patched and updated as a "IE" patches.

The Local Administrator password does not automatically change itself. Check event logs to see when it was changed. Otherwise see @TheCleaner's response.

@Cole Very true, I'm sure the RIAA and MPAA would love to have a chat with the management team and their financial folks.

No problem, I figured you did, just wanted to clarify it for those who didn't.

@Chopper3 If the guy has access to run a torrent on his machine, my guess is that he could easily reset the NIC if he wanted. You'd have to change his switch port to force it to 10mbps or hell even half-duplex ;)

Do you have a corporate IT policy about what is allowed on the network and what is acceptable usage of corporate resources?

comment What alternatives do I have for telephony if my LEC says the Central Office has an issue?
Bandwidth.com has always been great for me, they also happen to power most of the giant consumer services like Google 411 and even Skype these days.

Yes, update your question to be more specific next time.

OK, in that case my answer is not valid. You might want to edit your question to clarify this for any future visitors so they don't have to troll through comments.

@RonRatzlaff Pretty sure you can get those GPPs on 2003 too now btw. Just requires a client and domain software update.

Are you trying to grant local admin rights for a specific user to all computers in the domain or just a single computer?

comment Create a group 'WebDevelopers' where users have admin access to IIS?
Well this is something you need to work out with your IT group. Its hard for devs not to have local admin rights to install systems and run commands, its a serious limiting factor.

comment EC2 and Mongo, best practices
What @ceejayoz means is that fur effective use of Mongo two servers helps to eliminate fault-tolerance concerns. Not to mention improves the in-memory performance of the server as well.

OK so pull up either the server's logs or use Fiddler, what is the response code returned when you try to open the page with the favicon link? 200, 404, ?

comment CentOS : showing error message No space left on device
As a point of fact, the FAQ clearly states that this site is for professional systems administrators. Given that you don't know how to delete files it's a pretty good guess that you are not a professional administrator.

Are you sure you're HTML references the favicon file in the head section? I know that sounds stupid but it sounds like the file isn't calling for it to load.

If you look at the HTTP response is the image returned from the server or does it return a 404?
