Without a reference it is hard to say (since it might be some special option, but in general freebsd supports memmapped files just fine, and like forever.

It's up now, but still very slow. But I had to do something about it yesterday, so I gambled and it partially worked (see update of question). Will need another session to try to do cleanup so this doesn't happen again.

Linux raid wiki (raid.wiki.kernel.org) is not loading for me. Anyway thanks for the ramfs bit. I'm on a timebudget here, since I'm stuck with a down server. I didn't dare try to remove the md0 in case the md127 would be killed.
