comment How to check MX record when delivering to virtual domains?
I might have written unclearly, but I'm not understanding why you claim that my expectation is wrong. If someone connects to this Exim server and tries to send email to foo@example.com, the mail is delivered to bar@example.org (regardless of MX records). I'm not talking about local alias expansion on a server that has actual mailboxes, but a redirect-only service (see the link in the post). However, the actual MX question still applies, and it seems I do have to find a way to periodically clean the virtual address list.

comment How to log output of external command with Exim and driver=redirect?
@SmallClanger thanks, I'll consider that a possible workaround if no better option is found. :) But I'd rather have the error logged to mainlog, for convenience.

@Celada: the * part can be any [a-z] string (with length restrictions, of course). So, in my case $GENERATE does not help. Thanks for the tip though - might become handy for someone else who finds this page.

@DavidHoude: I'm afraid that adding on the fly is not an option, since any query that predates the addition will "pollute" name servers with an invalid answer. That creates problems that are quite rare but a bit nasty to resolve. (Of course time will fix the problem.)

revised Squid cannot cache static files with query string
Always a good idea to use example.com as the domain.
