comment OS/2 grep had a great feature where it would show you n lines BEFORE the search item was found. Is there an equivalent in unix anywhere?
And -C combines both A and B in one flag.

comment How do you make it obvious you are on a production system?
I'd recommend setting up mollyguard. It requires you to type in the machine's hostname in order to perform a reboot, shutdown, poweroff command, etc

comment Protecting Source Code From Certain Users in Linux
@Joel: If they have root access it would be easy to put a monitor in place that would check for the directory to be unencrypted and then extract the encryption key from RAM, or just copy the data

comment Set default permissions for new files (Linux)
So you're going to have uploads with execute permission set? Nice... What's the address? I promise I won't rootkit your server...

comment Refreshing a user's group permission
When a user is added to a group, that will not apply to any currently running processes, as the process stores knowledge of what group the user is in. Any children will not have the updated info either. This is why you typically see instructions to log out and log back in when changing your user's groups.

Where can I check this? The box isn't configured to send email anywhere. Regardless I'll check the PATH

comment Site Hacked Using ?cmd=ls
That's entirely your fault that you don't have backups. If you put it back up now, you have no guarantee that it is secure, and it very likely is not.

comment How to kill processes on a remote *nix machine
Don't use rsh! It's not secure at all. Use ssh instead
