comment Which package management system should we use to do deployments?
We're using puppet and want to integrate our packaging solution into puppet - do you see a solution to combine puppet and capistrano? (as puppet is "pull" and capistrano is "push" for me it seems not compatible)

Yay, thanks for the answer - I also think putting some effort into learning to create good RPM packages will pay off. Do you know some good "RPM primer" - or how did you learn about RPM?

Thanks for your answer - sounds experienced. Some questions: Apart from debconf (which IMO we currently have no need for), are there other reasons why you prefer debian packaging to RPM? Then I forgot to name the limitations of our current tool - namely there's no downgrading (rollback) and no deleting of files possible. Plus we don't want to manage a home-made solution - there MUST be ready-to-be-used solution out there, no?

I forgot to add the current limitation of our home-made option 3 - there's no such thing as downgrade (rollback, in our situation) and deleting of files - that lead us to consider switching to RPM. RPM being bloatware - I guess once we figured out how it works we could script it so it would be fairly simple, no?

we're using puppet - but I don't see how puppet could deploy our frontend code without using any sort of packaging/source revision infrastracture. Our idea was to use puppet to trigger the package-updates

@Ignacio: What would be a better benchmark? I just need a quick-and-easy way to half a bunch of servers into two halfs, each half should have approximately the same cpu power.

indeed, console is not a fit for our business people :-) For me personally it is - I'm a screen fan

thanks for the hint with Spark - although the client is from 2007 it looks like "reduced to the max"

comment MSSQL error: consistency-based I/O error - can it be caused by an MSSQL or OS problem?
for the record: the RAID controller was toast, the disks were fine, with the new RAID controller SQLIOSim runs through without errors

for the record - after SQLIOSim threw so many errors we exchanged the RAID controller - SQLIOSim is now green, yey!

we've looked into Jabber (Adium as client, openfire as server), but we run into so many problems: 1. we didn't see if the other client was online 2. joining channels on Adium often just does nothing - no error, etc. Jabber felt so much behind IRC - especially the clients.

I'm not sure we use ECC, how do I check that? We have a "write cache" activated in RAID that is 500MB, we now disabled this to check if this could be the problem

thanks for the hint with SQLIOSim. In fact, SQLIOsim found a (repeating) error: Error: 0x80070467 Error Text: While accessing the hard disk, a disk operation failed even after retries. Description: Buffer validation failed on D:\sqliosim.mdx Page: 186061, offset 0x8

fyi: I've cross posted this question at microsoft.com and got a bunch of good remarks there as well: social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldatabaseengine/thread/…

Thanks a lot, Page_Verify is set to checksum, we have "Red Gate" that helps us with the backups. Good tip about the maintenance plan to check for consistency!
