comment Resetting root password for MySQL problems (Mac OS X Lion)
Those instructions assume that you are running as root. Use sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_safe --skip-grant-tables. You will be prompted for your password when you start.

comment Can't create PID file on MySQL server, permission denied
@JamesBarnhill To expand on my earlier comment, make sure _mysql has x permissions to /usr/local/mysql-5.5.18-osx10.6-x86_64/, not just /usr/local/mysql as that is just a symlink. If you chmod +x /usr/local/mysql-5.5.18-osx10.6-x86_64/ it should start (at least that would match the working perms on my MBP).

comment mysql tables strange behaviour
You can find your mysql error logs by logging into your mysql server and running show global variables like 'log_error';

Have you looked in the mysql logs (what OS are you running on), or your web server error logs?

FYI, please use the example.com and example.org domains for examples as per RFC 2606 (tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2606), unless you are the owner of acme.com of course.

comment How do I prevent accidental rm -rf /*?
To use a gun analogy, this question says please make the gun recognize that I am aiming at my foot and not fire, but I don't want to have any responsibility for not aiming the gun at my foot in the first place. Guns, and computers, are stupid and if you do a stupid thing then you will get these results. Following along the gun analogy, nothing will keep you from hurting yourself except vigilance and practice.

comment email dropbox between two mutually untrusted sites
In the 90s we called this FidoNet. Sounds like what you want is to use the DMZ box as a smarthost, and try to deliver all outbound mail to Other Guys, but in this scenario they wouldn't be able to 'retrieve' the mail, just connect to the DMZ box and let it successfully deliver it.

comment How to start dovecot?
Find out if the dovecot service is running by issuing ps -ax | grep [d]ovecot. If it is, you can kill it with ps -ax | grep [d]ovecot | awk '{print $1}' | xargs kill -9. Then restart it with service dovecot start. Note, these commands work in bash, if you are using zsh you will have to escape the brackets.
