I added my nginx.conf here. Well it could be an issue that there is no index.php or index.html in der root directory of the web server. I thought that the redirection would take care of this and redirect to /wordpress/index.php Maybe I should consider placing a symbolic link of wordpress' index.php into the web server's root dir. What do you think?

First of all: thank you for your great blog about nginx. The last entry about PHP, nginx and memcached is really great and although it is quite technical, easy to read. I added the error.log entry for the 403 error and it looks to me that this is not a file system permission issue, but I could be wrong of course.

@MartinF No I do not think it is a permission issue. all directories have the permission drwxr-sr-x with the nginx server being in the 'other' group of users. I do not want that any directories are being listed. I thought that $uri/ in the try_files directive looks for the directory and if it is present it uses the file specified by the index directive.

Not really, I've put the index index.php index.html; directive into the http {} block to have it available in every server definition.
