It may be a server-side issue, but still with only one process accessing the nfs share, things work quite well, but as soon as we have more processes, some tend to hang. A nfsnice command / api might still help...

The configuraton ist "RAID X", a proprietary netgear level, with 3 1tb disks resulting in 2tb capacity (similar to raid5). The whole disk space is dedicated to the nfs share.

In the end, the vendor allowed us to use a virtual box for the license server, so I didn't try this. Still accepting the answer as the one with most hints. Btw, not installing vmware tools would be another idea. Thanks!

@John true. And they should be asked by a patient person willing to learn a lot of stuff which is usable one time only. Plan 3-5 work days until you fully understand it. Depending on the complexity this may even not be a joke.
