Thanks Cheekaleak. Currently 8.3 filenames are enabled, I'll see if it's possible to have it turned off.

chimney offload was also disabled to improve performance talking to other 2008 servers

We already had to disable SMB2 on the 2008 server to enable it to talk to other 2008 servers - the network share would periodically go unavailable.

@GregW - I'll get onto checking the settings of the AV.

@RobW - hundreds of XP desktops. This server is new (couple of months). The problem has always been there to some extent but as usage increases and more users start to use this server and the number of files and volume of data on there is increasing the problem is getting worse. IP6 is disabled on the XP desktops and Server.

@MarkM - the organisation does have a plan to migrate to Windows7. However that's not going to come to fruition for over another year. In the meantime I have a need to help improve network share performance for users with XP clients.

Indeed, the client has an upgrade path to remove Windows XP and migrate to WIndows 7. But that's months off. I was really hoping for a shorter term workaround. And I refer you again to the related fault which makes me suspect that upgrading the client desktop infrastructure won't solve the issue anyway.

Seriously? I can't change the entire client desktop infrastructure to fix a problem with Windows networking. Nor should anyone have to. And besides, the top related item shows that someone is having similar issues with Windows 7 - serverfault.com/questions/183603/…

comment Domain Trust 2008 to 2003
Reads the LSA domain policy information from either domain, then trust information for domain b written to domain a, then it gives the warning about FilterSiDS and quits. I get the same result if I try from either DC. I've found a few other examples of this problem on the net but no solution so far.
