comment Which distribution has the largest security update coverage
All distributions provide similarly timely security update for the packages that they maintain. So what you're really asking is “which distribution has the best compromise between breadth of coverage and low packaging latency for me”. Since you haven't given any criteria for choosing the best compromise, it's up to you to find it.

Reinstall from scratch. Make sure to upload only known good code (latest version of all software with all security updates applied, secure configuration restored from known good backups). Did you have a question?

comment Linux Bash IF conditions not processing when running as crontab
Always check the error messages! Look at the email that cron sent you to signal that your job failed and produced some output. You'll see the error message sh: 3: [[: not found (or something like it), for the reason samiam explained.

comment Is it bad to redirect http to https?
Entropy doesn't get used up (at least if you're defending against Earth-based attackers rather than doing voodoo). Either you start with insufficient entropy, and you can't do anything that requires randomness, or you start with sufficient entropy, and you keep having sufficient entropy no matter how much randomness you generate.

You can use my proof-of-concept script that reads /proc/$pid/mem.

comment How to copy a large number of files quickly between two servers
@niXar The ~ escape character is only enabled if SSH is using a terminal. This is not the case when you specify a remote command (unless you pass the -t option). So your concern is invalid.
