@MichaelColeman, exactly, two virtual hosts with the same document_root. The question in the end is Why the HTTP authentication directives in a subdirectory have precedence over mod_rewrite directives in the parent directory? and Is there a way to change/configure that?

@MichaelColeman, The rewrite rule is actually conditioned to work under one specific domain only. I have two domains: example.com and plain.example.com. So the HTTP autentication is supposed to take place when the user visits plain.example.com/subdir/*

If I only have a primary zone, how can I change the delegation without changing the NS in the domain registrar?

I realized that the LD_PRELOAD trick is never going to work, since the SSH command is just the client program that makes the connection to the SSH server. And it's the server the one that forwards the packets. So forcing the client to bind to a given IP won't make any difference.
