comment Inexpensive Remote Assistance software?
I use Copilot on the weekends when it's free to help family and friends. Good stuff. And yeah, you do need the user present to handle the UAC.

If you are on Windows Vista you might have a previous version of it in your local folder.

comment .Net Application Deployment
Also look into ClickOnce Deployment a couple of others mentioned. The app doesn't have to be pulled across the wire everytime a user wants to run it. It will check and only get a new copy if there are updates.

comment RS232 Hub - USB
I use PCI cards with 2 serial ports on each. I've tried half a dozen USB ones and most are not fully implemented or just don't work right. I think one from SIIG worked the best, but the cards seem way better. I've only used the 2 port models, but you could try two of these siig.com/ViewProduct.aspx?pn=JJ-E40011-S3.

Could you give an example of the computer names? The do not contain any underscore characters do they?

comment How to find a directory disk usage over network? (Windows)
This works well, "Folder use 121.79 MB." You can also use 1KB in place of 1024.

comment What OS would you use for a simple fileserver and why?
I agree. If you know Linux or BSD use one of those. If you don't then you might want Windows Home Server, which you can get OEM for about $95. Since some of your clients will be Linux it sounds like you, or whoever owns a Linux client, has experience with it.

comment What is the best way to keep track of changes people are making to your servers?
Agreed, we use our ticket system for change control tickets. It's policy to open one before starting, document the changes, and close it when done. Skipping this step is violating company policy, and it doesn't take long at all. I've even found it to be a very useful reference. Documented DR plan is also important, as is testing it to see if it actually works.

comment As a developer, should I upgrade to Windows 7, if so… what reasons should I give to management?
Depends on your corporate environment. We have login scripts that run, windows updates are pushed, everyone has the exact same web browser (for RIAs), same MS Office, etc. I wouldn't want to have some problem with my host OS and not be able to run the VM. If I'm not there someone else could use my workstation and be familiar with the OS and apps, although it hardly ever happens. My Win7 VM graphics are limited by the VM drivers, but I need those features. I wouldn't take the chance because its a pain to go back.

As Brian asked, I wonder if it's the double hop issue.

Can they be read from Active Directory? I have a PS script that gets the list from AD.
