comment How do I diff two text files in Windows Powershell?
This is how I did it in the past, which is a manual process, that I wanted to replace with a small script.

Because PowerShell is included now, nothing to download and install.

comment Why HDD rotate at 7200 rpm?
Everything between the double quotes was copied and pasted from PC Guide - pcguide.com/ref/hdd/op/spin_Speed.htm. "Hz per second" would be like saying, "RPM per minute."

comment Our security auditor is an idiot. How do I give him the information he wants?
The people on the I.T. Security Stack Exchange really need to see this (maybe most of them are users here too). Good job calling B.S. on this "expert."

comment Unable to Sign PowerShell Scripts
Good to know. I was taking a look at your question because I can't sign my scripts either, without being an Administrator on the PC. I asked about it here: superuser.com/questions/174878/…

comment How do I get meaningful error messages in IIS7?
After you get it working you might want to set it back to not sending errors to the browser.

comment MS SQL Server Firewall Ports
Express always uses dynamic ports by default. Having 1434 open will let you get to it, but not if the dynamic port number is blocked. If you want it on 1433 follow those steps in that link with that port number. If you have more than one isntance you will need ports for those too.

You can also turn off the firewall to see if you can connect, to determine that is the problem, but be sure to turn it back on as soon as you are done testing.

Also, from the SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Network Configuration, Protocols for SERVERNAME, TCP/IP, Properties, IP Addresses tab, IP#, TCP Port (TCP Dynamic Ports if SQLEE). This config manager is also where you enable/disable protocols.

comment What requirements does an IT department work space need?
Make sure there are outlets above the bench, not underneath it like most desks. Or you could just use one or big power strips.

I use Copilot on the weekends when it's free to help family and friends. Good stuff. And yeah, you do need the user present to handle the UAC.

comment .Net Application Deployment
Also look into ClickOnce Deployment a couple of others mentioned. The app doesn't have to be pulled across the wire everytime a user wants to run it. It will check and only get a new copy if there are updates.

comment RS232 Hub - USB
I use PCI cards with 2 serial ports on each. I've tried half a dozen USB ones and most are not fully implemented or just don't work right. I think one from SIIG worked the best, but the cards seem way better. I've only used the 2 port models, but you could try two of these siig.com/ViewProduct.aspx?pn=JJ-E40011-S3.
