There is a difference between opportunistic and mandatory encryption. It's often possible for an active MITM to disrupt opportunistic encryption, causing the endpoints to fall back to no encryption, which can be monitored. With mandatory encryption, the connection would be dropped, causing a denial of service but not a breach of privacy.

$(ls -rt | head -n1) will of course break on filenames that include newlines, but for this purpose you can probably get away with just "don't do that".
