For the ftp part: What ftp server are your using? And for the other part: What's so wrong with the same group for all users, including the webserver?

I already tried those options as well as I can see from my log I created when trying to repair that stuff. But now I almost completely reinstalled the system so I can't completely reproduce the problem anymore.

Try to chroot that user to that directory. I can't give examples right now, but restricting to one directory does call for chroot.
