comment How can I configure my User/Group/Permission setup for shared webhosting on linux to prevent permission between webserver and user accounts?
So, you are not running a FTP server but you want to use FTP/SFTP?

For the ftp part: What ftp server are your using? And for the other part: What's so wrong with the same group for all users, including the webserver?

I already tried those options as well as I can see from my log I created when trying to repair that stuff. But now I almost completely reinstalled the system so I can't completely reproduce the problem anymore.

Try to chroot that user to that directory. I can't give examples right now, but restricting to one directory does call for chroot.

comment Which Linux distributive could you advise for a webserver with PIII-700MHz and 512Mb RAM?
For ~7 years, until last December, I had Debian stable/unstable (mixed) running on my home server with Dual-P3-450MHz without a problem. As mentioned by others, just make sure you only install what you really need.
