comment Apache2 could not bind to (arbitrary) address, and unable to open logs
sounds about right. unable to open th elog files probably means you're trying to run as non-root and apache can't open the root-only default /var/log/... dir+files

offtopic. not a programming problem. try serverfault.

comment Apache / PHP Begins to Deny SQL Requests after about 2000
Are you hitting this webpage once for every student? Or do you hit it a single time and pass in 2000+ student ids? One for every student will almost certainly trigger an attack defense, since you're basically slamming the server with requests.

comment New Server is randomly adding port 7081 on HTTPS requests
Unless your php code has '7081' in it somewhere, it's likely to be something at the webserver level.

comment performance expected from cheap VPS's
This question is impossible to answer. 4gig of ram is all nice sounding, but it's pointless if you're running this code on an 8088-4.77mhz. If it's a multi-core xeon server, oooh shiny... but if the disk subsystem consists of a paper tape and a 200yo senior work a hole punch, you'll still get crap performance.

comment Server responds after 120s - how to find the hold up?
do you have shell access to the server? you can check if there's any pending http requests (e.g. curl) by using netstat.

comment Memories in virtual machines(VMware) are ECC memories´╝č
Simulating ecc on non-ecc memory would have HUGE overhead and slow everything to a crawl.

comment Setup a Centos 6 server as the php server
First you'd have to actually ask a question, and server setup is off-topic for this site anyways.

Any reason you're compiling it yourself and not using WAMP or a similar pre-packaged setup?

comment Using SSL in my PHP site - is that correct?
SSL does nothing for security except prevent sniffing traffic while it's "in flight". Get your server secured before worrying about sniffing attacks. it's far easier to break into a bank vault and steal everything, rather than trying to grab a few bucks out of a bunch of people's hands as they leave the ATM.

comment What exactly defines a LAN?
Local would by definition be anything that's not "remote". Which then extends the question to what's "remote". One safe-ish way to go is anything that's not connected via a bridge/router/gateway.

comment how to find php library for a specific mysql version
Try forcing the php-mysql package to install with --nodeps. MySQL's libraries are fairly stable and the php modules SHOULD work even though there's a version mismatch.

comment What rights does /vol/www have on ubuntu web server?
You'd have to make them 0777 at least for a typical webserver process to have write access to that directory, then.

comment Transfer a Linux server to virtual machine
You could try taking an image of the server's drive and convert it to whatever the VM is expecting for an image format. it might even boot. or it might not. depends on how nice suse is about having its hardware changed out from under it.
