I could also remark that I put in as much effort as you apparently did researching your question. "Ubuntu find what is installed" and "Ubuntu what processes are running" works in my version of Google...

The term for what you describe is "Developer" or "Developer forced to take on some Systems / Operations duties".

You are not a DevOps. DevOps is not a title, it's a culture.

comment How to use wrapper recipes in chef?
This is in a custom cookbook recipe, in this example, the cookbook is called 'appname'. Honestly, it sounds like you should spend some time on learnchef.opscode.com

The only direction that I could point you to is toward a pub. Though in all seriousness, nobody should be expected to support (or be expected to recover) software running on a 10-year-old database, written in 20-year-old software. There comes a point where it is unreasonable to expect you to support. The only thing that I could expect someone to be responsible for is the backups/restore of the server.

comment Disk Capacity Planning for Whisper / Graphite
You have to calculate this for every retention policy, and 4.5MB is what it works out to for my (single) retention policy, but yes, that's the rough formula...

This is a new implementation at this company, and I don't have access to my old one. Since the top-level fileSize result matches the ls -l result, I take that to be bytes. When I add up the sizes of the archives within the .wsp file (as reported by whisper-info.py), they come close to the overall .wsp file size (the rest I assume being metadata and such. This should be the size of the file for all time, as data falls down to lower data resolutions, and old data points are discarded.
