So does that mean that the threat analysis is identical across all of them?

comment Is the HP ProCurve 1800-24G Switch fanless or not?
@ColdT: It has been confirmed that not all of them are fanless. It's pretty silly that HP did not give different model numbers to the different revisions.

I ended up getting a brand new 1810G-24 in the end, as I could be sure that it was silent.

The seller insists the one he has has a fan. Weird.

comment Windows 7 as NTP Time Server
I've had a lot of problems trying to syncronise Linux and Windows servers. Do you know if an Amazon EC2 Linux server would make a suitable NTP server for a domain? Or does the EC2 hypervisor override the clock?

I had to rebuild the replica DC in the end. Next time I will remember to make a snapshot before making the smallest of configuration changes.

It's not a direct solution, but have you considered using iPXE? You can boot off a webserver or iSCSI target. You can chainload it, so you do not need to modify any NIC firmware, and so you can boot VMs from it too. ipxe.org

comment How can I stop Windows DNS server properties settings from changing by themselves?
Ah yes, the private-facing interface on the remote DC/DNS server is on OpenVPN, and does get its address through DHCP, as it is an OpenVPN client. I have set OpenVPN to always give the same address, but it is still technically a dynamic address. I cannot make that host an OpenVPN server instead of client, as I cannot get it to work like that on Amazon EC2 for some unknown reason. So now that I know the reason for this issue, I still need a workaround (registry entry NTFS permissions?), or just ignore it. There is also still the other problem on the other DNS server.

comment How can I stop Windows DNS server properties settings from changing by themselves?
@murisonc: Thanks. I have been trying what that link says to do, apart from restarting the DNS role, which I have now tried. I'll have to wait and see if that has worked. I am pretty sure there are no group policies that would affect this.

@DaveM: DNS works fine, but the first problem causes Event ID 410 to appear in the DNS server event log. I'm not sure if the first problem causes any errors, but I can see it causing DNS request loops.

You can always make a default site with a blank page to stop that from happening.

comment Cannot browse remote networks even with WINS configured
@MathiasR.Jessen: DNS is being used of course - it's an Active Directory domain, but WINS is still needed to browse other subnets, apparently (Network - the thing that used to be called My Network Places and Network Neighborhood).

All hosts have WINS Server details in the connection properties. I had a look through the linked page, but I cannot figure out what could be wrong.

I also have the WINS servers push/pull replicating, but it would appear that there is some sort of problem with WINS.

I see. Well, how come it cannot traverse broadcast domains and one has to use WINS then? I suppose I need to read up about that. Anyway, I have already set option 044 in DHCP options (as well as 003, 006, 015 (and 046 as I mentioned above). This problem is also occurring with servers with static IP addresses. It's is just through the DHCP setting that I have realised that point-to-point from WINS is not working, and it is not attempting Broadcast, which I would have thought should happen.

comment Windows 2008 Server can't connect to FTP
Oh okay. You could always use an SFTP server instead of using FTPS, and I'm sure you know that FTP is very unsecure. Windows users could use FileZilla or WinSCP to upload files. Dreamweaver also has SFTP support built-in.

Are you just trying to get files onto the server because you are using Server Core? If you are, I have a much better soution.
