I'm a full time IT guy in the R&D labs for research of petroleum and petrochemical refining. When I'm not helping my wife in the raising of our children, I like to pretend I'm a halfway decent photographer.

comment Internal Site to Site VPN over MPLS speed issues?
Bandwidth utilization turned out to be the key to my issue. There was a user at the sub site that would periodically upload large amounts of data (200GB+) to a server located at my site. When he did this he maxed out the available bandwidth. I am now waiting to hear why one user on the sub-site could monopolize the 45Mbs connection, effectively shutting out the rest of the users from any useful connectivity. We're a very large corporation paying another very large corporation to manage our LAN/WAN systems, I would expect some sort of QoS to be in place to stop this from occurring.

should I run the MTU ping tests inside the VPN tunnel, outside, or both? If this was the case, wouldn't this be a constant issue? This issue is intermittent.

A little bit of both I guess. I have access to the Juniper firewalls. The LAN/WAN group will pull reports, but I'm not sure what reports to ask for. Were getting push back saying everything is fine, no problem found, so I'm having to investigate it more myself to reinforce my case that it need more investigation.

comment MMC Cert Manager Plug-in is making LDAP connection to external site, why?
I'm not familiar with Wireshark, other then a general idea what it does, what more will it tell me? Rebuilding isn't an option. They were built from the same base OS image, but since have had Citrix XenApp and a custom 3rd party software installed. The systems are in production, so the required down time and cost to pay the vendor to reinstall are not an option.

comment Dell OMSA Remote Enablement? What is it for?
Thanks for the answer. Seemed like a lot of hoops to jump though to get it turned on, so would it be safe to say in a vanilla Windows Server install on a physical server there isn't much reason to enable it?

As an update, after contacting Microsoft, they provided a hot fix for the STORPORT.SYS driver that allowed a dump file to written to a SAN from Windows 2003, allowing us to track down the original issue causing the BSOD.

For what it's worth, the blade servers don't have physical disks in them. They boot off of an HP EVA440 SAN. I'm starting to think that maybe the issue here.
