comment Which operating system should I choose for OpenStack?
One of the key reasons to go with Ubuntu is that they will support OpenStack Essex to whatever the I release is called. See wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/CloudArchive

comment Diff for a locally modified package in Ubuntu
I'm modifying the source code of the packages and, for the record, I realize this isn't the ideal way to work. However, I'm just doing some quick and dirty testing on throw away VMs so I'm not too worried about it.

Tried it. No luck. I also tried everything from wiki.davidjb.com/… (hence the "/dev/dm-1: read failed..." in some of my output) but that didn't work either.

comment Can't remove open logical volume
Added the info you requested to the question. It was being used as a volume for OpenStack Compute (aka Nova). I actually managed to remove it by going nuclear and rebooting the machine and then doing an lvremove. Way more drastic than I wanted to be. I still have some other volumes hanging around that I would like to get rid of without having to reboot so any help you can provide is appreciated.

It doesn't contain anything. It's not a partition. It's not mounted (any longer). No active snapshots.

This works for me. For anyone following along substitute $KEY for test_ident, user@middle for hostA and target for hostB

A big part of the problem is that my public key on target had a copy/paste error so I couldn't do passwordless authentication to target in the first place. Now that it's fixed the accepted answer below worked for me. Thanks to all for the help.

Yep. First "ssh-add $KEY" then "ssh-agent" finally "ssh -A user@middle ssh user@target" and I still get the Permission denied.

Doing a "ssh -i $KEY -fN root@middle -L2211:target:22" works without prompting me for a password but when I try "rsync -e "ssh -p 2211" /dir/on/local/ root@localhost:/dir/on/target/ -avz --progress" I get asked for root@localhost's password. What could I be missing?

comment Install PostgreSQL on Ubuntu without starting it
The bottom line is that I don't want PostgreSQL to create a cluster at /etc/postgresql/8.4/main, which it does by default on install/startup. I want to be able to install it, set the location of the cluster and then start it.
