Actually I was only talking about the A record at the root of my domain (e.g. test.com A 111.111.111.111). I would leave the records pointing to my MX intact. But good to know that a MX should always point to an A record instead of an IP. Thank you.

You're right, "reserved" might not be the right word. Anyway .local is used by a lot of Apple software and therefore using it in another way could cause problems with this software.
