Formerly known as "Jimmy Shelter".

Then one appeared among us, in our own form visible, but greater and more beautiful; and he said that he had come out of pity.

I'm like the Clint Eastwood of backups. I drift into town, say "ahm-a gonna clean up yer backups", shoot the place up a bit, get rid of the bad guys, then drift back out again.

Been there, done that, still doing it.

comment Common wisdom about Active Directory authentication for Linux Servers?
+1 for this; my general experience is "they say it works but it's never clean".

comment How does a team of Systems Administrators share passwords securely?
Seconded on the "hundreds is a very troubling number" thing. I think you maybe need to back up and reconsider how you're managing the whole security thing in the first place rather than attempt to put sticking plaster on what you've currently got.

comment Need to push a mass desktop background change
-1; the OP has already explicitly tried that and it didn't work. We're either figuring what went wrong or suggesting alternative solutions now.

+1; all great tips. Proper monitoring is a must.

comment Windows data backups with alternating removable drives?
It's a long time since I've used ntbackup, but if memory serves you can set a job to append. Your scenario would be creating two identical jobs but going to different destinations and running on alternate days, configured to append if possible.

+1, good advice.

comment Virus that tries to brute force attack Active Directory users (in alphabetical order)?
"we don't want to rebuild and have the same thing happen all over again, so we need to figure out what this is" warrants a +1

comment How to avoid Master Browser errors, MRxSmb Event ID 8003?
No misconfiguration really, it's not actually an error on your setup, and is only relevant if you're using WINS/NetBIOS on your network.

comment Windows Server: Change AD account name
+1 to both Tom and Robert here. The audit trail is very important, especially if the person is leaving against their will and does something naughty before they go.

+1, definitely my thoughts.

I feared as much, but I still had to say it. :(

Quite correct; that's what I meant.

comment What needs to be done after a Domain Controller crash?
+1 for the answer, and also an upvote to Graeme's comment - even if it's something that should be taken for granted it should also still be highlighted.

comment Which is faster? 4x10k SAS Drives in RAID 10 or 3x15k SAS Drives in RAID 5?
@pehrs - have you ever had a single disk fail in a server? Thought not.

comment Workstation file synchronization to deploy though a group policy
Exactly what I was gonna suggest. You can configure your redirection policy to move anything on the PC back to the server first time too. I think offline files might be OK if you're happy to live within it's limitations (I've seen MS guys use it before and they seemed OK with it). I wouldn't advise using it unless you know that you have to though.

This one should get a +60 if it was possible.

comment Creating an email account for a user when the name already exists
It's just a naming convention, so as long as it adheres to the rules of SMTP addresses it's not the kind of thing that there would be a best practice for. RFC2821 is the bible for SMTP and doesn't specify any standard.

comment Which is faster? 4x10k SAS Drives in RAID 10 or 3x15k SAS Drives in RAID 5?
It's a pity that you can't do 4 x 15k disks in RAID 10 because performance is really sweet.
