Formerly known as "Jimmy Shelter".

Then one appeared among us, in our own form visible, but greater and more beautiful; and he said that he had come out of pity.

I'm like the Clint Eastwood of backups. I drift into town, say "ahm-a gonna clean up yer backups", shoot the place up a bit, get rid of the bad guys, then drift back out again.

Been there, done that, still doing it.

Forgot to add: your police should also have a computer crimes division, but you would need definite evidence before going to them; in my experience they don't like having their time wasted.

comment Joining laptop to Active Directory domain
Depends on the version of Windows on your laptop, and be aware that if it's a Home (or Home Premium if Vista or 7) you won't be able to join it to a Domain.

comment Remembering Passwords
Most hashes include a salt (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_%28cryptography%29) which makes it harder for rainbow tables to work. Also read here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… - RTs ain't infallible. A password can also be brute-forced for sure but that's where a good account lockout policy would help.

comment MSI keeps trying to install, and I can't stop it - why?
I wouldn't expect the offending program to show in Add/Remove Programs in cases where the cleanup utility is needed, so generally if you cross-reference one list with the other something obvious should jump out.

comment Win32 software to sync a file system to a FTP server using checksums?
Do you have any other kind of access to the destination server (is it on your local LAN or accessible as if it was, I suppose I'm asking), and what's the destination server OS?

Why FTP specifically? The built-in DFS can accomplish this syncing if all you need it for is some kind of backup purposes.

What about popping a small monitor on top then? (That's actually the one I meant)

comment broadcast ping on windows LAN
+1; the RFC (1122) actually permits broadcast pings to be silently discarded.

comment “What would you define as a security event and a security incident and is there is a difference between them”?
Just show us in the question that you've tried, and if it's homework admit it straight up (otherwise reconsider your wording) and all will be fine.

From my perspective it looks like you don't really understand these things. That's cool, we all start somewhere. However, it also looks an awful lot like you're not making an effort to understand them, and that's not cool. Plus your questions are smelling quite strongly of homework, which in general we don't like - we're busy people, after all. This one is going to close soon, but - if you want to ask again - at least show that you're trying yourself instead of just looking for a canned answer.

comment Can i configure dhcp on windows server to assign fix ip address all the time
I'm more interested in why you need to do this. I suspect that if there is an underlying reason why which could be worked around or circumvented entirely, it may be a more viable approach.

comment Windows Server 2003 memory problem
Sounds familiar. Try reducing the number to about 3 or so, putting apps that can live happily together into the same pool, and not only will RAM usage go down, but the apps should also go a lot faster. I'd be interested in hearing how you get on with this.

+1, I've seen exactly this same symptom before and it was down to app pool/web garden configuration (too many of them).

Probably not for closing on account of nagios - which could be to blame.

comment Should a sys admin backup important data in anyway he can, even if he disagrees with the backup strategy?
+1 for the failure on both parts; I still can't accept that the admin thought it better to hold out and do nothing though.

@Oneiroi - this is wrong on so many levels. They may not be as reliable and secure as a proper backup is what I hope you mean, but even so, when the alternative is no backup at all I don't think taking a high and mighty stance for the sake of making a point is going to cut it in the Real World.
