Then one appeared among us, in our own form visible, but greater and more beautiful; and he said that he had come out of pity.

A pint of plain is your only man.

Can we leave the "free vs proprietary" ideological battle where it belongs, and just answer the question, please?

comment How to install windows on a server with no CD or DVD drive
That's what I'd do. Chances are you're going to need that external drive again sometime, and it's not like they're hideously expensive anyway.

comment Modern security awareness campaigns
This gets my vote. In my experience the number 1 cause of yellow-sticky-note-syndrome is users having separate passwords for each individual system. The more they have to remember the more likely it is that they will at some stage start writing them down, using the same password for everything, picking trivial passwords and/or never changing them. The best way to prevent this is for us to start taking a more joined-up view of security.

comment Why uninstall did not remove the corresponding folder?
+1. Behaviour of the installer/uninstaller is entirely down to whoever wrote them, and is it really that big a deal anyway?

comment What is the failure rate of servers being moved physically from one location to another?
@Satanicpuppy: Have you seen a 2850? They're designed for easy drive removal. No substantive concerns there.

comment “Connection failed” error when trying to telnet into SQL Server
If you don't know whether or not a firewall is active, and you don't know if it's across a VPN or not, I suspect that (1) you're not authorised to be doing this, (2) you're not an admin, and (3) your motives may not be honourable.

"With all those servers I'd be more worried about things getting put back together wrong" - that's why you label them properly. I'd consider it a wash too.
