I can't do the gateway options because I have the free Google Apps, not the pay version. Also, gateway doesn't seem like it does exactly what I want. I don't want to route any mails through my server. I just want the server to be able to send mails with any from address @mydomain. Also, I have tried smarthost in the past. It works, but all emails going out are labled as being from the user that I use to authenticate the smarthost.

comment How do I make sphinx restart when I reboot my Ubuntu server?
This script worked perfectly. For the record, here are the start/stop/restart commands that I used. This is on an Ubuntu Hardy server, and I installed sphinx 0.9.8.1-release from source. start /usr/local/bin/searchd stop /usr/local/bin/searchd --stop restart /usr/local/bin/searchd --stop && /usr/local/bin/searchd

comment How to bring .vimrc around when I SSH?
I guess this is as good as it gets. The trick is that I have to setup a repository on a machine that is accessible from all the other machines. With a secure network topology, that's not always easy.

Yeah, this is too cumbersome. I have to do lots of poking around the remote machines to find the files I want, and often have to edit with sudo privilege.

comment All sub-domains to one IP in hosts file?
Another note. I was able to use dnsmasq to make this work. However, on Ubuntu I had to modify the dhcp client configuration of the host machine to prepend 127.0.0.1 to the resolv.conf.

This is something interesting. At the present time, this does seem to be the correct answer, so I will mark it as such. However, it doesn't actually solve my problem, perhaps because it is not solve-able. Just something to think about.
