comment HAProxy URI balancing isn't very balanced
I can see how that could be a problem. Stripping those variables in haproxy in stead of in Varnish would help with that - but I don't know if that's possible.

comment What does an LVM2 Snapshot contain?
In the scenario you've sketched in your question, you are safe.

comment What does an LVM2 Snapshot contain?
If you've allocated the extents to keep that amount of differences tracked: Yes. But if not; The snapshot is the data you will lose first - so you shouldn't rely on the data to be intact over time - unless you allocated the same amount for the snapshot as for the original volume.

comment What does an LVM2 Snapshot contain?
The extents referenced by the snapshot volume will store the snapshots version of the file - and the extents referenced by the original volume will store the other version of the file. Ref. my answer.

comment Why does the host command not resolve entries in /etc/hosts?
You can't. dig/host uses DNS directly. If you need to do a namelookup that checks the hosts-file first, you have to use getent hosts or something else that uses gethostbyname()
