I have been working as a Network Engineer and Systems Administrator in ISP/Telecommunications networks since 1996. I have extensive experience the BGP, OSPF, MPLS, IPv6, VoIP, ATM, DSL, QoS and many other TLAs.

I am married with a son and three dogs. I enjoy skateboarding, cycling, reading, music and pondering on the future of networking.

comment Question about non-authoritive DNS
This is true if your zone is configured correctly. It is possible to have servers listed in the parent zone with do not give authoritative answers. These are known as lame servers. It is also possible (and sometimes preferable) to have authoritative name servers that are not listed in NS records (e.g. a hidden primary).

comment What happens if I ask 127.0.0.1 via arp broadcasting?
This answer should have the caveat "Unless proxy ARP is enabled" Proxy ARP is almost always a bad idea (it was mostly useful in classful networks, which are very rare these days); however some equipment defaults to having it turned on, so it is something you need to be aware of when troubleshooting.

comment Can I use Third Party Compact Flash in a Juniper M10i Router?
Its not just a case of saving a few bucks buying a cheaper brand - its saving over $500 buying the same component for less than $10. Juniper's pricing seems to indicate they don't want to be in the SanDisk reseller business, which is fair enough, but if that is the case then why not let us buy our own SanDisk cards for the M-Series in the same way that we can for the J-Series?

comment Explain the output of dmesg
Its called a ring buffer because it is allocated in a cyclic manner. The buffer has space for a fixed number of logs, and once the last element is used the first space will be overwritten. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_buffer

comment New MPLS link bringing network to a halt - Spanning Tree Protocol
I would disagree with chosing rapid PVST as the default for all environments. Most cisco architectures have a limit on the maximum number of spanning tree instances. I have seen a number of situations where the number of VLANS has exceeded this and switches configured for PVST/PVST+ have been silently discarding BPDUs and created loops in the network. PVST is great for all cisco small networks, but if you are likely to need several hundred VLANS or need vendor interoperability MST is a better choice.

comment What are some good, IP Address Management solutions for IPv6?
Very true, and this is one of the options I am presenting to my employer. I'm not holding my breath for a favourable outcome though.
