comment Server grinds to a halt every few days
Just a few minutes after I checked top, which showed the most memory-hogging process using only 8.4%, I started getting my regular error again: -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory

All right, I'll keep an eye on that and report back. Thanks.

I have a gig of RAM, 2266MHz processor, 20G hard drive. The workload is almost nothing - a hundred hits a day at most - but I'll try Ganglia. Thanks.

Thanks for the mysqltuner.pl suggestion. It helped me figure out which directives I needed to adjust.

comment DNS troubleshooting
These didn't lead me to the answer but they're all helpful suggestions so I'm selecting this as the "correct" answer. I ended up using named-checkconf and named-checkzone to see if my config files were sound and it turns out they were not. Knowing this allowed me to fix my config files and now my DNS server is working again.

That didn't work, either. Invalid command 'RubyAddPath' Is this some kind of esoteric thing nobody ever does? I'm surprised by how hard it is to get Ruby working with Apache compared to PHP.

I tried it. It didn't do anything and if there's any documentation, they did a great job of hiding it.

comment What does this gpg warning mean?
If my sendmail has gpg hooks, it's not something I set up. I do in fact call gpg in db-backup but forgot to include that part. In any case, Niall's answer took care of the problem.
