We want the server to be isolated from the internet to minimize the risk of people looking at our data. Another reason is simply so we can tell our clients (who own the data) the server isn't connected to the internet so they can sleep better at night. Looks like I want to configure my router not to route external requests to the new server. The router is a Watchguard Firebox X. Thanks for the thorough answer.

I'm backing up via rsync and it's the ReadyNAS that's running the rsync command. (The ReadyNAS only supports a few different methods and rsync is one of them. I don't believe DAR is.)
