The first time I saw Unix was in the mid 1980's. My uncle had just gotten a new IBM AT PC for his job programming C behind some accounting software. They were doing their development on AT&T System V release 3.

I sat at that machine, frustrated by it's lack of DOS, and thought "there MUST be games on this damn thing ..."

comment Why is my KVM, RHEL6.2 server swapping?
@MichaelClosson, I saw the update after I'd commented :) I'm not sure what to make of the original problem, but wonder if it's recurring? It's also worth looking at this: publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/lnxinfo/v3r0m0/…

Asking the host OS for 15gb of ram will not automatically make 15gb of ram unavailable to all other processes. (KVM guest processes aren't different to the host kernel than any other process in this respect.) There isn't per se a problem with having VMs who's defined memory collectively sums to more than the physical amount available on the host. (I have half a dozen KVM servers with 24GB RAM each, with VMs totalling twice to three times that on each. The key is that I don't expect them to use it simultaneously. Google for "kvm memory overcommit".

If you suspect one of the changes to sshd_config, it'd be best to roll them back and re-add them one at a time until something breaks ...

James, you're right, mine does the same. However, Thomas' output does seem to indicate an issue with his key, regardless: "debug3: Could not load "/home/thomas/.ssh/id_rsa" as a RSA1 public key"

In fact, it looks like it's trying to load your private key as the public key. I'd normally expect it to use id_rsa.pub as the public portion of the key.

I'm an idiot, and should also have looked at the start of your more verbose log more closely. It's got issues with the public key file itself. You might try regenerating that.

add an additional two "v's" to your ssh to get firehose level debug output: ssh -vvv me@foo
