comment block all packets in windows 7 (so nothing appears in wireshark)? Can anything locally installed do it?
@Matt No. And it's not just curiosity. It actually makes sense for a firewall to be able to block everything and if it can and you can then allow what you want then it's clear what it's doing and it offers a good amount of control in a logical way with clear rules on what it is and isn't allowing so that you know.

you have not read the question beyond the title. I actually mentioned that step already. And no picture is necessary.

I don't think it works like that. Because I am not seeing a ton of things in wireshark. The fact that i'm not seeing a ton of things in wireshark(as I would if blocked things still showed up there), that implies that things that are blocked do not show up in wireshark. What you suggest is that wireshark would still see all sorts of things, VNC, webpage requests, even when blocking, but that is not the case.

comment Is it possible to capture packets of a Router?
@StevePeng The other thing I mentioned that one could call changing router, was a linux machine router. Linux could run on an old computer somebody might give away (or a little appliance designed as a linux router, so w/ router pci card and the free software, not hundreds of dollars), but just even an old computer and just needs a router PCI card (and the technical know-how) and could capture too. It must also be possible to set up a windows machine as a router(and then you can of course capture too).

@StevePeng I did not suggest to get a better router appliance! I suggested to change the router(s) to any router, this is not to capture packets, but to see if after changing the routers, you still have the issue. This is a diagnostic step to see if it is a router issue, and would be done as one is unsure if it is a router issue. That's fundamental troubleshooting. And getting "any" router is not expensive.

comment Stealthed vs Closed Port
there used to be a website called grcsucks that exposed the problems with gibson/that site, such as him using hype and even at one point, a disinformation campaign. That said, his online port scanner is still useful.
