spinics.net/lists/linux-api/msg01144.html seems to be a rejected patch..

also, dd is nice, but for drive/partition operations I tend to use more .. proprietary solutions. Acronis TrueImage seems to work better (compression, samba shares - from livecd/liveusb flash).

The system I talk about has just about 50 gigs free on 500 gb XFS partition (that can't be shrinked, currently only growing is supported via xfs_grow), and the root partition is XFS too; even worse, it is a well-established Gentoo which is almost that fat itself. Even worse, the move has to be done without adding more storage and currently can't backup more than 60 gigs - so no partition operations. Need to put Win' to that machine for testing some stuff.

why do you use user/pass identification instead of user/publickey identification?

comment Which flavor of Linux would be best to install on an old Dell P3/P4 box?
I can recommend you starting a Beowulf cluster out of these PCs, if you have a spare 100/1000mbit switch lying around. This would be a nice experiment.

it actually worked, but had to use alias = instead of addressing alias[1] or alias[2].. it didn't supported them, so editing the entry by other than first name was impossible (not a problem, but will ask for a correct syntax on a list)

hm, it's in Gentoo portage tree, so will try it.. but somehow I feel that syntax of augtool> set /files/etc/hosts/*[alias[1] = 'active.vm']/ipaddr 1.1.1.1 will not be tolerated by it. Will test..

it's a very nice idea, with complete regeneration, sir - at least it saves from having empty hosts file

PgSQL, and a soft in quesion should reuse existing connections at least for a minute.
