comment Content-Length not sent when gzip compression enabled in Apache?
@redbmk fair point, I just didn't want to seem ungrateful. Philippe actually has the perfect simple fix for this, so I've accepted his over mine.

Nice one. This is probably the fastest way to solve this problem. If anyone needs a higher level of customisation (e.g. chunk some requests, not others), see my answer serverfault.com/a/183856/54957 for a manual solution.

I have solved my particular problem with a PHP script to generate my own listing.

Thanks for the clever hack! I was hoping for a solution that could be applied to the folder and all subfolders, ideally with a .htaccess setting. I'll accept this answer since I don't think what I wanted is possible.

comment Qmail with AUTH CRAM-MD5
mailq, I agree :-) thanks guys, I'm no stranger to Linux, but maintaining patched versions of programs on this server is not something I'm wanting to do. I think I'll go with a different solution. I haven't patched it incidentally, just vanilla Centos5 packages, but when I EHLO it reports CRAM-MD5 so I figured there must be a way to configure it.
