comment MyISAM for data reads
Can you give us some idea of the size of the database and table in question? Total size on disk would be useful. Also, what spec is the machine you are running on?

comment MyISAM for data reads
Its my guess that as the asker has 1 billion rows in his db, then he is unlikely to have it all cached in RAM in the buffer pool - hence there will be reads required to get to the data outside the buffer pool and on disk?

comment Duplicating a database in a master slave environment
+1 great answer and thanks for pointing it out. Fortunately(?!), I'm not in that job any more, so don't need to sort this out any more! I will however remember about Xtraback for the future (did know of it, but not thought of it in this scenario).

comment MySQL query 193 hours running and counting… what to do?
Also, that is the MySQL daemon that has used up a total of 194 hours of CPU time for all the work it has done, rather than a single query execution time, which is what the title of the question seems to imply!

comment Upgrading RAID 5 array drives in a DELL 2950 with Perc 6i controller
Bloody marvellous :) What an excellent answer! In terms of the backups, this entire machine is used as an internal analysis machine, where all the data is also available distributed across other servers. It was designed to be effectively redundant, in that we can re-build the whole of the data by copying across from the source machines. Essentially, this is (one of) the backup(s) of the source data, and gathers it altogether into a cohesive analysis machine. I am also considering what @Aaron said in another answer, and we may just rebuild the machine with the new drives from scratch.
