comment Set generic iptables rules?
You're absolutely right. The problem was the order of execution. After I changed a couple of lines and added -I everything started working fine. Thanks! :)

comment Cheap test for determining if mod_rewrite is on in htaccess?
Do you need to see if mod_rewrite is installed on the server or if it's enabled (as in RewriteEngine is set to ON) ?

I wouldn't recommend he uses the program while his linux is still running. The program will move content from one part of the hard drive's disk to another. This means some parts of the hard drive (that contain OS files) may get fragmented because they're currently in use.

comment Why does APC (or similar) cause performance problem for shared hosting?
What @devicenull is pretty true. A shared hosting will have difficult time with RAM. As you know a shared hosting can be used by many clients and any one of them can have sites with many php files. APC will cache every php file that has been executed. A workaround to this problem can be setting cache expire. But that won't guarantee that the RAM will be enough.

comment Want to learn about Linux servers and how to operate them?
In back-up of @Gopoi's post - if you're coming from M$ background you will most certainly screw up at least a dozen times before you start understanding how things really work. When you compile a kernel by yourself - you shall become a "master" :D
