Note that /logs/catalina.out is an absolute path and not a relative path and it does not search for the file in /usr/sbin/tomcat/logs.

Your information is wrong. The ubuntu kernel-version is not neccessarily the same as the upstream kernel from kernel.org. The ubuntu 3.2.0-20.33 kernel is based on the upstream 3.2.12 linux kernel.
