I'm a Mono hacker, mostly working on C# applications running on Linux.

D'oh. You're right! In my defense, that article is not very clear on that detail.

comment How do I rename an mdadm raid array?
@briankb what I meant is that I no longer care what names I end up with, because I don't use them any more. I put UUID where I would put e.g /dev/md3 before. If the answer is outdated, please suggest an updated one and I'll be happy to accept it. But in general, I'd suggest avoiding the initial problem altogether by not using array names at all.

I'm now using array UUID instead of name, as it proved to be much more reliable for me (e.g. dual-booting messed the names each time, and does not cause problems with UUIDs).

comment Windows Server 2008 R2 grinds to a screeching halt during file copy operations
You were right! The 'Virtual TLB Flush Entries/sec' shoots through the roof when a copy job starts. Great catch, too bad it means that we do have to replace our hardware.

Dual-monitor setup, ATI Radeon (quite decent) - this might be a good catch, I'll look into it.

Yes, outside. Main problem scenario is that I power off my VMs and export them so that someone else can copy them to his machine.

Added NCQ info and drive models. I was sure this hardware was overkill for a workstation, but seems that I have been mistaken.

This is a single-user workstation, not a server, I've updated the question.

Nope. The server is basically only a HyperV host. Yes, I'm 100% sure it's not infected with anything. No, the VMs aren't busy.

Nevermind - I found out myself that CacheFS for now only supports NFS and AFS.

comment With what tool should I format a hard drive as UDF?
FAT32 has a 4GB file size limit and does not store POSIX permissions. NTFS does not store POSIX permissions. I do need those features, and only UDF provides them. Besides, it is faster than NTFS.

For initial revisions (before 1.5) this is true. However, later versions (those available in Linux and Windows Vista) are also meant to be used with random-rewrite media like hard drives.

comment What is the partition id / filesystem type for UDF?
I am also booting Linux out of the same drive, so I need one partition to be of a format supported by grub. I just found out that grub2 (experimental) can boot Linux from UDF, so I will try this.
