comment VPN That Hijacks Lan (Can I use a VM?)
Apologies about the question, I needed to login to post and stack overflow must have a bug with it as it returned with an incomplete question. I am a professional sys admin.

comment SSD on Vmware ESXI 4 (TRIM? Good Idea?)
Its purely financial, the SSD drives work out cheaper and you get WAY more performance out of them. Space isn't what I need, its performance.

comment VMWare Esxi Looking for Bottlenecks
in terms of drives if we are running 6 machines on each drive, don't need much hdd space so a 64gb ssd would be affordable and fast so this would make a lot of sense. any experience with how well ssd's perform on esxi?

Also what are your feelings on SATA vs SAS vs SSD for this sort of setup?

Yeah, i think its not a vCPU issue as we have 1 per VM. Looking at read latency it definately looks like that would be the issue. So you'd rec one drive per 4-6 VMs?

I have 1 vCPU assigned to each VM and each VM has about 500MB Ram reserved.

Yup, its raid 1. I am not sure what you mean by vCPUs but in configuration have 2 sockets, 4 cores per socket and 16 logical processors.

comment Manipulate Multiple VMs at the same time
This sounds like exactly what I need. One thing is my host machines are all over the world so lets say I deploy XP with some software onto all of them via a master template. Then I update the master template (add a 10mb program). When I resynch all the systems does it only download the 10mb + whatever overhead or resynch the entire image (could be gigs)? Thanks!

Okay so researched AD. If I deploy software to that can it automatically install the software on the XP machines?

comment Help Me Spec A Server for MAX VMs Reasonable Cost
hmmm, well with buying it from HP/Dell/IBM I would rather not pay a huge sum of money for them to install VMware etc. But I take it you just mean it will be okay out of the box for me to install it?

Reasonable cost... when I start buying machines will prob be in increments of $10,000. So that would either be one super machine or 10 $1,000 machines etc. Rack space, testing, AC etc not too big of a deal right now as this is being run from a garage but down the line could be an issue. Would pay a slight premium but nothing huge.

AH, interesting that the XEONs are so faster. If they are comparable then you are right, save a lot of the VMWare licenses. Would you think with a spec like that you could save a legitimate amount of money self building vs just doing with dell?
