comment How do I keep the ssl key for our website confidential?
I guess this would only work well if you can install the CA as a trusted cert on the user's browser, such as in a corporate intranet setting. I knew something was wrong with my brillant scheme. :(

comment why is loopback IP address from 127.0.0.1 to 127.255.255.254?
Not following @TomTom - 127.0.0.1 would evaluate to 0111 1111 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0001 binary, which is still positive (it's the MSB that is the "sign" bit) - now, 128.0.0.1 (1000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0001) is negative.

comment Routing WIFI and LAN for specific traffic
You get internet through your wifi, correct, i.e. if you don't connect via LAN and only Wifi, you can reach external sites like Google, etc.?

maybe sudo route del default 192.168.2.10?, not exactly sure how to do it on freebsd/mac osx but it should be similar.

Is everything 192.168.2.X on the LAN? If it is, that makes the solution much simpler.

comment What language for starting on Linux?
I'd say bash, c, then perl. Then anything else. If nothing else, learn perl. It's very useful in the UNIX world.

comment iptables packetfilter on virtual bridge
I think they would appear on INPUT. FORWARDING means routing, but bridging is equivalent to "layer 2 routing" which is switching.
