Also see this on our Unix & Linux sister site: Which is the safest way to get root privileges: sudo, su or login?

Or put the same line in the provided user-data file in a #cloud-config section.

comment Security concerns in Ubuntu and CentOS
If you standardize on a RHEL derivative, you have the option of paying for actual RHEL for support and updates for systems where you're really concerned about security. You get long-term support and employees working on providing updates, and as a bonus, those employees get a paycheck keep working on that providing updates. (Disclaimer: I work for Red Hat, but I would give this advice when I didn't, too.)

That's not entirely true. Read more carefully. Tht said, the information is now over two years old.

This is totally it. I filed a bug about this a few months ago, at bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=874912

comment Why does host swap out VMs when there are 16GB of buffer cache and swappiness = 0?
In which case you should investigate using cgroups around your vms.

This doesn't answer your question directly, but, try fail2ban. (It's in EPEL.)

If this is an answer, answering the question shouldn't be out of scope. If this is just a comment, it shouldn't be an answer.

Yeah, this. The command given in the question won't work on Linux either.

I assume from your tags that this is an Ubuntu AMI?

comment Dovecot. Why do we need a public namespace?
@mdpc: why superuser? This is an imap server, not client.

comment linux/solaris kill many proccess with one command
But be very careful if going between Linux and Solaris, because at least on older versions of SunOS that I used, killall literally kills all processes, without the process matching and selection of the Linux version.

comment Netcat (nc) traditional package for RHEL 6.x?
What''s wrong with "You can change the options used by configuring the PHP script", the first suggestion in the docs you've quoted, to which installing an alternate nc is given as an alternative?

What if the program happens to use something other than documented or what it claims to use? (Unlikely to be true with git, but could happen in other cases.)

comment How to list logged-in users on Scientific Linux (RHEL clone)?
I think it's probably this bug, although that's rather old — maybe the Fedora change didn't get into RHEL? (See also blogs.gnome.org/halfline/2007/06/29/login-records)

comment What is “Radan HTTP”?
This seems right, but I think it's probably not scanning software, just netstat, which reads from /etc/services, which uses names from the IANA list linked to in the question.
