comment nginx virtual hosts not listening to correct hostname
Perhaps this question would be better off moved to StackOverflow.com? As a customer support professional myself I like having a local environment on which to test, but am new to setting this up on a Mac. This seems like a legitimate question for professional developers, although not necessarily professional admins.

comment Is that OK to leave a small endless loop script running on server?
@krisFR If you're on a train and you can see it's going off a cliff, you can only argue with the conductor about whether he should pull the brake for so long before it becomes a moot point -- at which point you can either stay on the train and hope for a miracle, or engage your common sense and jump off the train.

comment How can I install the htpasswd utility in Red Hat / Scientific Linux?
In CentOS at least, httpd-tools does provide htpasswd. I found it using yum provides \*bin/htpasswd ;) Great way to get htpasswd without installing the httpd server (often not desirable if you're running another web server already, or don't want to run a web server)

comment A domain I've never heard of resolves to my website
+1 for the second part of this answer; make a default vhost to capture all the bad domains, and then set up specific vhosts for your domain(s). I also like the "Redirect permanent" solution, as it allows you to tell people "this domain is broken!" -- just make sure you don't provide your email/etc on that error page otherwise users of the other domains will start whining at you about the other domains being broken (which is beyond your control). Also +1 to TomTom about duplicate content penalties in Google.

comment DNS using CNAMEs breaks MX records?
The problem is, as per RFC1034, "if a CNAME RR is present at a node, no other data should be present" -- since the root needs to have NS records (to be useful, anyways), there will always be other data, which violates this section of the RFC.
