comment Powershell: lastLogonTimestamp blank for some users
@Matt - I assume you have checked that when you run the single statement it is using the same DC as when you run the loop? Or used ADSI edit to confirm what is actually in AD on the DC your script uses. Other thought, what error handling do you have in your script, is it possible that reading the attribute is failing?

@Tatas The lastLogonTimestamp attribute does replicate to all DCs, just not very quickly. Any user who has logged in at least once more than 14 days ago should have a value in this attribute. At least, that is my understanding from reading the docs.

comment Packets dropped due to NAT? Firewall? Unroutable private IP addresses?
A true router can provide some protection as a firewall, they can be configured to drop some traffic but it is very static. A true firewall will allow more dynamic control, such as allowing replies to outgoing connections but not allowing unsolicited incoming traffic and matching patterns of traffic (like port scans) that could be malicious.

How do you KNOW that the server isn't actually being attacked? How many page requests does the server usually handle? How long does it take to process an average page request?

comment What server setup for a small web development company?
I don't know what OS VMWare is based on, but IIRC the Xen hypervisor is supported on Ubuntu which might be easier for you to admin. I'm a (windows) developer by trade and run a Citrix Xen box at home for various things and have found it easy enough to work with.

SQL Server (and probably other RDBMS) require decent IO bandwidth to perform well. I don't know what sort of size datasets you are planning to work with but you may want to consider a set of disks dedicated to SQL Server. You can always try it and then add disks later if necessary.
