comment need recommendation for running PHP/Zend based optimizer
I have actually tried getting kvm running on this server. However, setting up the networking is proving to be a challenge. I have a separate topic on serverfault.com trying to figure out just how I can get a hosted server with a public i.p. address set up using eth0 to also have a kvm guest OS have network access. It just doesn't work for me.

Thanks. That makes perfect sense. I shall try it and report back if all works well.

As far as building PHP 5.2 from source, or downgrading manually; I have followed some procedures install PHP 5.2 manually. However, there are many more things needed like mysqli and phpmyadmin, all of which I couldn't easily figure out how to downgrade. Instead of chasing a bunch of dependencies, I would rather just install the store software on a supported platform.

I had already checked that. Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface xx.xx.xx.8 * 255.255.255.248 U 0 0 0 eth0 default xx.xx.xx.9 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 That is the automatically generated routes table, which looks good to me.

comment Planning my first server with Ubuntu KVM Virtual Machines
I would recommend a combination of the following, in case you hadn't already had this in mind: 1. use drbd to mirror your vm's to another machine dedicated to backups. Or you could even build a fairly similar machine to start up the vm's if the first server goes down. 2. backup the vm images to somewhere else. I had a server that had lots of disks in it all go bad when the power supply (non redundant) blew. At the time I was only backing up data, but backing up the entire vm images would have made restoring so much easier.

I think backuppc will be perfect for a completely different project! Thanks a lot. It might also be a good replacement for running remote backups to a different site, to add to or replace jungledisk for offsite backups.

Unfortunately I'm looking for something fairly similar to what I am running now; it especially needs to be open source and scalable. I have reviewed VMWare solutions, and the cost of even a two node virt cluster with a good 3rd party near CDP backup solution is very pricey.

Thanks! Those links have lots of good information. The thing is that I need something that can work on live running virtual machines, and not have to run for hours to calculate differences. The ultimate single machine would be a nexenta install that could run xen, kvm(obviously on in the linux kernel) or something similar. That way I have high performing virtualization solution for windows and linux server installs on image files or lvm (or zvol), and a way of taking unlimited snapshots and only transferring the differences from the last backup quickly!

comment backups with ubuntu server sharing via samba: lvm snapshots necessary?
That was is one of my fears actually. Obviously samba is doing the file locking, so I assume it would have to quiesce in samba. I need to research this more and/or wait for someone who is familiar. All other shared files should just be word/excel docs and pictures.

I had already considered something like that. The problem is that at least one of the primary vm's is running a custom database software specifically tailored to the HVAC industry and doesn't have a dump feature like you'd see in a sql database. We are exporting some of this data to M$ SQL, but no all of it, and only once a day. Unfortunately, just being the network admin doesn't allow me to make such design decisions in what's running in the vm's... only how to run the vm's and back them up.
