comment Am I at risk by leaving a test FTP account available on the server?
Plus, this is one password where a periodic change is definitely a security positive,

comment Is there a way to provide user-specific passwords for Wi-Fi?
Something like cloudessa (cloud based radius) might satisfy "easy", but less so on "cheap" (definitely not "free").

So which machines lose connectivity? All? Just static/ Just dynamic? Next question: from a "dead" machine, can you: ping the sonicwall by IP? ping 8.8.8.8?

While you're testing: try forcing a later tls version (1.2?) just for fun

comment curl 7.21 does not correctly call a host with a host header on https
I think what the previous commenter means is maybe this version of curl always uses the host header from the original URL (so you would need to set up dns, and then you might get it to work) - try using curl to fetch another https site (with dns) and see if the correct sni header is sent (use wireshark). Also worth looking at what ssl library curl is built against.

comment Bash Script to Compress / Transfer / Remove Log Files
Are you 100% certain "logrotate" won't do a job for you, before you go building your own? It's very powerful, and prerotate/postrotate scripts might aid your transfer

comment Login before using the internet
There's no other way to do it, really. However, many devices (especially mobiles) will check to see if they can reach a particular website, and warn you that you may need to log in to use the internet so it is less of a problem.

comment Use proxy like an /etc/hosts file
The proxy (if specified as an explicit proxy) does do the DNS lookup for both HTTP and HTTPS. The only caveat here would be the complaints from your browser (which may be fatal to some browsers!) if you try to redirect HTTPS traffic for, say, facebook. You can also rewrite urls with a squid ACL.

comment Can't connect to SQL Server on virtual machine while Open VPN client is running on my system
You may be able to manually add a route that lets you see the Hyper-V install instead. This may not be an optimal solution if there is something similarly addressed at the other end of the VPN!
