If you're using CVS, you'd probably be very familiar with it for this very reason (if the directories in the repository aren't setgid, then you get lots of permission errors as different users try to checkout and commit the files)

Compare your /etc/resolv.conf with the DNS servers you're using in the Mac. Perhaps they are different? You can also try "dig +trace smtp.gmail.com" to get more info from DNS.

Hadoop + Hive is for querying warehoused data ( wiki.apache.org/hadoop/Hive ). Distributed data stores like Cassandra ( incubator.apache.org/cassandra ), Voldemort ( project-voldemort.com ), and MongoDB ( mongodb.org ) are more tailored for low latency access to recent data that HPWS needs.
